Uptown Market Opens Sunday
It seemed for a time that only authentic TC neighborhoods could sustain farmer markets, leaving Uptown ignored for its suburbanite crowd that preferred to shop their food from an anti-union, anti-health care, global warming denying, libertarian organic natural store such as Whole Foods. Not the case anymore! Lakes residents have finally jump started the Uptown Market into a successful endeavor after last year’s rainy trial run.
The Uptown Market now runs every Sunday starting this June 20, running all summer to September 26. The event occupies four blocks between Dupont and Lyndale on 29th Street, which is the crumbly frontage road to the Midtown Greenway. Bicyclists rejoiced last year at its locale while drivers might stick to parking two blocks away and enjoy Lowry Hill East’s famous tree-lined sidewalks. One could argue it’s more aptly a Lyn-Lake event but we don’t mind.
The fair contains wonderful local farmers from the plains of the north to the prairie of the south. When we say wonderful, we mean wow is that bag of zucchini really the same price as a latte? It seems as food prices continue to seemingly skyrocket, the best choice is for fresh produce only a few hours away. Of course the UM still retains an Uptown flavor with its polished retail offerings from local craft makers notably in fair-priced jewelry and art pieces. We’re more excited about the eating-food-while-buying-food-to-eat-later department. The whole street food vending craze is about to dawn upon Minneapolitans now that the city has relaxed its health code subjugation. It’s going to be a delicious hit to taste the competition between established Magic Bus Cafe and long-time locals Chef Shack and Foxy Falafel. Wafting aromatics next to grilling proteins is the scent of street food enlightenment.
