Young Indie Groups Making A Move
Acoustic indie duos come and go from the music scene, with only a few having the melodies and vocals to take their recognition to the next level. And I think these two might have it. Jenny and Tyler, a husband and wife who met at the University of Delaware, have created a sound uniquely theirs, “blending folk, pop-jazz, rock and even a hint of bluegrass, Jenny & Tyler combine their unique sound with uncoventional and soul-stirring lyrics to create music that defies being boxed up and labeled.” The band is only a few years old as their debut album “A Prelude” was released in 2007. Their sophomore album “This Isn’t a Dream” was released earlier this year in April. Jenny and Tyler are in the middle of their fall tour and are making a stop in St Paul, during the day tomorrow, and Minneapolis, at night. If you’ve got some time, get out and support this exciting young duo, plus, the shows are free! Can’t beat that.

On the topic of young bands, Minneapolis has birthed but another. The Total Babe is “a violin-laced folk-pop quartet of 17- to 18-year-olds, mostly from south Minneapolis, led by high-school dropout
Clara Salyer.” Don’t let the dropout term keep you from believing she’s incredibly motivated. At just 17, Total Babe has already had a song play in a German commercial, landed a small indie label in NY, and played gigs during the CMJ Festival.
“The group’s debut EP, “Heatwave,” bears vague echoes of orchestral pop groups such as Camera Obscura and Belle & Sebastian, with a little Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley-ish purring.”
Their lighthearted vocals and catchy tunes create a sound that keeps you coming back for more. The future looks like it may be bright for this crew, pending where post-graduation and success takes them.
EP release party: Dec. 4 at 7th Street Entry, with Red Pens.
