Retro Heaven: Mad Men S3 Kickoff

When local DJ, Jake Rudh, embarks on a journey to celebrate a time period, he really embraces the culture of the era, from music to fashion, even it’s politics climate. Best known as the creator of Transmission – an 80′s-themed tribute night every Wednesday at Club Jäger  – Rudh managed to keep his mid-century enthusiasm well-hidden. But luckily for Twin Cities 60′s fans, it hides no longer.

This Sunday, watch the swanky Jax Cafe (1928 University Ave. NE.) transform into a 60′s pop culture extravaganza as Vita.mn and Jake Rudh present, The Official Mad Men Season 3 Kickoff Party. Not to be confused with the DC Comics supervillian tag team, Madmen, Mad Men is the AMC television drama from creator Matthew Weiner (screenwriter for two seasons of the epic series,  The Sopranos) based on the competitive world of Madison Avenue’s ad executives in the 1960s.

This classy shindig features tunes and ambiance by DJ Jake Rudh, live musical performances of Mad Men era jazz standards from locals Jeremy Messersmith, Janey Winterbauer, Lucy Michelle and Jeremy Walker, and a mid-century modern design showcase, courtesy of MPLS’ design gallery Spinario. Don yourself in the fanciest, chic and mod 60′s vintage (see below for local vintage loops) and don’t forget to visit the on-site photo studio to capture your sexiness.

Sip delicious Mad Men era signature cocktails, nibble on appetizers from Executive Chef Bob Foster and posh it up with cigar and brandy tastings in Old World Garden courtesy of Lewis Pipe. Gift certificates and prizes from Jax, Spinario Modern Design, and boutiques Blacklist Vintage, Tatters Clothing will be given away all night! Plus, a portion of the bash’s proceeds benefit nonprofit illness treatment and recovery web service, CaringBridge. Stylish and generous that’s the Jake Rudh way. Can’t wait to see you there in your formal wear!

Located on Eat Street, this year-old retro boutique (co-owned by Jeremy Messersmith’s wife Vanessa) specializes in vintage clothing and home décor trends from the 50′s through the 80′s. A bit hidden on the corner of Nicollet and 27th, it’s a modest two-level with a plethora of vintage dresses and acessories to chose from, a helpful and friendly staff AND they’re offering a 15% discount to anyone who mentions they’re shopping for the Mad Men party. I found my dress for the bash here and with accessories and shoes the whole outfit was only a little over $100. Totally worth it for a dress and shoes I guarantee I’ll wear more often than just to Jax tomorrow. Plus they have an entire upstairs dedicated to men’s vintage fashions.
