Weekend arts: Minneapolis does robots and cars

FRIDAY

Those adorable polygonal tin boxes are back. That’s right, robots. Corey McNally of Warehouse District created his own epic collection called My Invisible Friends. For a while now, these creatures have popped up on coffee shop walls and art galleries generally as felt marker against splotched paint wood blocks. They sort of remind us of that Deep Thought robot from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Find them and other visual artists at spotArt gallery’s reception Friday June 19 from 7-10pm, 1828 Marshall St NE. Music by Lonesome Dan.

Form+Content Gallery is a rather high-level gallery being tucked next to the Room & Board of Ikeas, Poliform, in North Warehouse District. Fortunately this Friday their (unpaid) interns will have a collective show called “Tabula Rasa” (Clean Slate in Latin) and as Wikipedia educates the masses “an epistemological thesis that… knowledge comes from experience and perception.” Nurture wins! Meaning these interns have been hard-whipped by the very experienced and talented in-house artists of F+C including renowned local painter Jill Evans (who has educated hordes of college students) and respected architect Jay Isenberg (who likes ballzy installation art). Friday June 19 from 6-9pm on 2nd Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave N next to Odegard.

SATURDAY

Calsurf continues its foray into hosting art alongside skateboards. “Sketchbooks Etc.” is, well, sketchbooks, of anime-esque illustration. Chris Park’s PlantMonster Art blog details some of the work he will be showing. We’re not sure if its literal books or posters on the wall. The Japanese Superflat style is evident in his seductively elegant figures. The other artist on the bill is Prof. Are they talking about hip hop artist Prof?. Saturday June 20 from 7-10pm at 1715 West Lake (about James Ave).

The big Art Car Parade isn’t until July 25 but there are a dozen events on their website to check out the stylish roadhipsters beforehand. The Stone Arch Festival is running Sat-Sun 10am-5pm this weekend at Saint Anthony Main and will feature the art cars on Saturday only. Art car aficionado Damon Cuccia will show you the applique skills.
