Soo Vac Gala Bash gets lucky

While the Soo Visual Art Center’s Get Lucky show last Saturday may have encouraged it’s visitors to indulge themselves with a “Seven Deadly Sins” theme, the attitude of those in attendance created an atmosphere that was anything but “sinful.” With the recent extinction of so many notorious and esteemed local non-profit organizations, it was a relief to find the event sold out with a room buzzing with art aficionados and loyal supporters celebrating the seven years of Soo Vac’s commitment to contemporary artists.

Sponsored by other fellow local businesses and organizations such as Vita.mn, the organic restaurant French Meadow Bakery, mnartists.org and the Urbanimal, the event hosted a silent auction with all proceeds going to the growth and sustainment of the Soo Vac’s future programs. Intermixed between the fashion forward crowd of both seasoned and youthful supporters, circuit bending DJs and drinks provided by Zipp’s Liquors was the art of course, on display from some of the scene’s most provocative and progressive artists.

All the art had a certain flare, although the artists that stood out in my mind – and I’m sure we will be seeing more from as the years progresses – included the 70′s eroticism digital photography of A+E Editor of The Rake’s “Secrets of the City,” Kate Iverson, iIllustrator and mixed media artist John Vogt (MinnPost review), YouWorkForThem designer Eric Carlson and the collage work of Jennifer Davis. We can all breathe a little easier knowing with our support the Twin Cities art community will continue to flourish and be an integral part of region’s flare and appeal.
